PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS (OYSTER MUSHROOMS).

 PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS (OYSTER MUSHROOMS).

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are a type of medicinal mushroom. Often consumed as a food, it’s also available in dietary supplement form. In certain systems of traditional medicine (such as traditional Chinese medicine), oyster mushrooms are used to treat a variety of health conditions.
Oyster mushrooms contain a number of substances thought to influence health. These substances include beta-glucan and several other polysaccharides (a class of carbohydrates found to affect immune function).
Uses for Oyster Mushrooms.
In alternative medicine, oyster mushrooms are said to help treat the following health problems:

-Atherosclerosis,
-Diabetes,
- High cholesterol,
-Respiratory tract infections.

In addition, oyster mushrooms are purported to stimulate the immune system and protect against some forms of cancer.
Benefits of Oyster Mushrooms.
So far, few scientific studies have focused on oyster mushrooms. While there’s currently a lack of clinical trials testing the effects of oyster mushrooms, some preliminary research shows that the fungus may offer certain benefits. Here’s a look at some of the available evidence for oyster mushroom’s health effects:

1) High Cholesterol.
Several animal-based studies suggest that oyster mushrooms may help lower your cholesterol and protect against hardening of the arteries. For example, a preliminary study published in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology in 2003 found that oyster mushrooms may reduce total cholesterol levels.
In tests on rats, the study’s authors also observed that treatment with oyster mushroom helped increase the animals’ antioxidant status and decrease their levels of triglycerides. High triglyceride levels have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

2) Cancer.
Some preliminary research indicates that oyster mushrooms may possess cancer-fighting properties. This research includes a study published in International Journal of Oncology in 2008, in which tests on human cells demonstrated that an oyster mushroom extract may suppress the growth and spread of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Additionally, a mouse-based study published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms in 2011 determined that an oyster mushroom extract may fight tumor growth, in part by activating certain immune cells.

Alternatives to Oyster Mushrooms.
There are several types of medicinal mushrooms that may help strengthen your immune system. These mushrooms include maitake, ganoderma, and shiitake.Getting your fill of immune-boosting foods may also help enhance your immune function.
For help in keeping your cholesterol in check, make sure to get plenty of soluble fiber (found in a wide range of foods, including grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables), limit your intake of saturated fats, and load up on omega-3 fatty acids.
There’s also some evidence that drinking green tea on a regular basis and consuming plant sterols may help combat high cholesterol.

Where to Find Them.
Oyster mushrooms are sold as a whole food in many SUPERMARKETS and food stores. You can also buy oyster mushrooms from farms specializing in natural products like

MUSHROOMS DECREASES RISK OF BREAST CANCER.

Mushrooms have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cholesterol-reducing, and immune-enhancing properties, as well helping to reduce blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Generally speaking, mushrooms are a good source of dietary niacin (vitamin B3) and riboflavin (vitamin B2). White button mushrooms are also a good source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Consumption of mushrooms was found to be associated with lower risk of heart disease in one European study. Mushrooms contain numerous compounds with anti-cancer activities, including various β-glucans and lectins, butein, ganodermanontriol, grifolin, lentinan, marmorin, and nebrodeolysin.

Various mushroom extracts have been shown to reduce proliferation and/or induce apoptosis of human bladder, cervical, colorectal, esophageal, head and neck, kidney, leukemia, liver, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, non-small cell lung, ovarian, pancreas, prostate, spleen, and stomach cancer cells, as well as malignant glioma cells. Mushroom extracts also have been shown to prolong survival of mice inoculated with melanoma cells, inhibit the growth of human colon cells in mice, and induce apoptosis of colon cancer cells in mice.

Breast cancer-related effects of eating mushrooms.
A case-control study of 1,009 Chinese breast cancer patients found that mushroom consumption was inversely related to breast cancer risk. A study of Korean breast cancer patients also found consumption of mushrooms to be associated with a significantly decreased risk of breast cancer. Another Korean study found that both high daily intake and high consumption frequency of mushrooms was associated with reduced risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women.

Many types of mushroom appear to have beneficial effects with respect to breast cancer prevention (although note that some mushrooms are poisonous and others have been shown to strongly promote cancer in the laboratory). The information below concerns mushrooms commonly available in the U.S.
-White button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporous) are the most common mushrooms sold in supermarkets. They are also known as button mushrooms, white mushrooms, or table mushrooms. Portobello and crimini mushrooms are closely related to white button mushrooms. Of the mushrooms studied, white button mushrooms have among the most powerful proven breast cancer chemopreventive properties, since they have been shown to suppress aromatase activity and estrogen biosynthesis, in addition to inhibiting proliferation of estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer cells. Several studies have concluded that diets high in white button mushrooms may lower the risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women, by reducing aromatase activity.
-Maitake mushrooms (Grifola frondosa) are sold dried or fresh in upscale supermarkets and specialty markets. Maitake mushrooms have been shown to reduce growth, inhibit angiogenesis, and induce apoptosis of human breast cancer cells in the laboratory. However, a 2009 trial of maitake mushroom supplementation in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors found that, contrary to expectations, the maitake extract had both immune enhancing and immune suppressant effects at various doses.
-Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) are widely available fresh or dried in grocery stores and specialty markets. Shiitake mushrooms have been found to inhibit increases in tumor volume of human breast cancer cells implanted in mice.
-Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) usually are sold only in powder form in capsules, in liquid extracts and as tea, since they are too bitter and tough to be eaten as food. Reishi mushroom extracts have been shown to inhibit proliferation, adhesion, angiogenesis, migration, and invasion of several types of breast cancer cells, including triple negative cells. The addition of green tea extract to reishi extract has been shown to have a synergistic effect in the inhibiting adhesion, migration and invasion of hormone receptor negative (ER-/PR-) breast cancer cells. Reishi extract has been shown to be effective in inhibiting inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) progression, one of the few foods to have demonstrated beneficial impact on this form of the disease. Reishi extract should not be used during chemotherapy. One study reported that reishi extract reduced the cytotoxic effects of Adriamycin in ER+/PR+ breast cancer cells. The same study reported that reishi increased the effectiveness of tamoxifen.

CHRONIC MALNUTRITION IN TANZANIA.

Poverty and food insecurity are the main drivers of chronic undernutrition in Tanzania. Chronic undernutrition is the greatest contributor to under-5 mortality and is estimated to cost the country 2.65 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) due to lost revenues from poor cognitive and physical development in early life. It is caused primarily by inadequate access to a diverse and quality diet and poor feeding practices at home.
The economically underprivileged urban communities in Tanzania live without enough to feed on to satisfy their physiological needs especially the micro-nutrient. These communities are resource deprived as they struggle to meet their immediate necessities. The youth unemployment level in Tanzania is estimated to be over 60%. Women are at risk malnutrition and they play a fundamental role at household level inclusive of child care.

Solution: What is the proposed solution?.
-Mushrooms are very nutritious foods, not resource straining to produce and yet still uncommon on the local markets.

-Their nutritional value is almost twice that of vegetables or fruit. They are rich in Vit. B, C & D, mineral elements, dietary fibre and contain substances that may prevent or reduce cancer, heart diseases, diabetes and viral infections.
-The biodegradable bi-products of the gardens can be used as organic manure which is vital for plant growth especially for vegetables and fruits on which man and livestock can feed. -Mushrooms have an overwhelming market demand. The venture is such an ideal source of income and employment opportunities. The project seeks to promote value chain management through preservation, and processing.

PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS.

  PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS.

*Mushrooms are fleshy, spore-bearing reproductive structures of fungi.
*For a long time, wild edible mushrooms have played an important role as a human food.
*Mushroom production is completely different from growing green plants.
*Mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll and therefore
depend on other plant material (the “substrate”) for their food.
*Mushroom, a protein-rich wonder food which does not have any publicity as it deserves.
*It is this precious vegetable that would solve the problem of protein malnutrition in our country.
*Coffee pulp, either as a sole substrate or supplemented with other organic materials, can be used as a substrate for growing the edible mushrooms Pleurotus, Lentinula, and Auricularia.
*Four types of mushrooms viz., white button, oyster, paddy straw and milky mushrooms have been adopted by farmers/ entrepreneurs at marginal and commercial scale in different parts of the country at present.
*Mushroom cultivation is a well-established and profitable biotechnological process carried out worldwide on a large or small scale.
*From a production standpoint, the white button mushroom has the highest growth rate and potential for production.
*Cultivated mushrooms are edible fungi that grow on decaying organic matter, known as a substrate.
*Mushrooms have a high nutritional value and are high in protein.
*They are also a good source of vitamins (B1, B2, B12 and C), essential amino acids, and carbohydrates but are low in fat
and fibre and contain no starch.
*It is also known to have medicinal values and certain varieties of mushrooms can inhibit
growth of cancerous tumor.
*Many by-products from agricultural production and food processing can be used as growing media in mushroom production.
*The market for mushrooms continues to grow due to interest in their nutritional and health benefits.
*The market for mushrooms has been expanding in recent years.
*The trend is away from the canned product toward fresh and dried mushroom sales.
*Currently, oyster mushrooms are currently being produced in Tanzania for the dried export.
*Mushroom cultivation is a good example for the use of forestal not-timber resources.
*As mushrooms become increasingly popular, consumers are searching for more and more variation within them in terms of colour, texture and shape of cap/length of stalk. The recent increase in demand for brown, oyster and shiitake mushrooms reflects this trend.
*Small-scale mushroom production is now being carried out in many rural and suburban peasant communities throughout the country.
*The mushroom production was sold directly by mushroom growers to retailers who marketed it directly to consumers.
*Mushrooms have been valued throughout the world as both food and medicine for thousands of years.
*Mushrooms are gradually becoming popular as they are rich in minerals and vitamins and very low on fat and sugar.
*Mushrooms are very popular in most of the developed countries and they are becoming popular in many developing countries like Tanzania.

MUSHROOMS AND THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET.

MUSHROOMS AND THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET.

Mushrooms can potentially solve some of our most pressing and serious problems.
Mushrooms can:-
-Clean up oil spills all over the world
-Absorb farm pollution
-Fight off smallpox and flu viruses
-Combat insects
-Create rich environments for farms and new forests, and
-Become a sustainable fuel source for the future

Another fascinating thing about mushrooms is that they are part of nature’s recycling system. If mushrooms didn’t exist, neither would plants because mushrooms and mycelium break down rocks and organic matter, turning them into soil that provides the basic structure for nourishing plants.
