Mushroom Research and Development Initiative (MRADI):
L.E.A.R.N (Love Environment and Reliable Nutriceuticals) Program Improving Nutrition for Orphans in Africa.
Global efforts to eradicate childhood malnutrition focus on prenatal care, breastfeeding, and distribution of nutrition to children living in families. They do not reach the tens of millions of children living in orphanages and foster care worldwide. Yet recent research demonstrates alarming rates of malnutrition among these children, robbing them of their health and the chance to learn, work, grow, and develop meaningful relationships.
Mamaland Mushroom Farms is the first agribusiness specialized in exotic and wild edible mushrooms in Tanzania to study, address, and create awareness of the exceptional nutritional needs of children living without permanent parental care. We partner with Orphanage centers, institutions and related NGOs to: identify the most pressing nutrition and feeding needs of the orphaned and foster children in their care; pilot and implement evidence-based, culturally sound and scalable nutrition and feeding interventions; and build on-the-ground knowledge, capacity and commitment to owning the problem and its solutions over the long-term. Our programs are distinguished by the population of children we serve, and by our focus on solutions that will sustain themselves long after Mamaland Mushroom Farms’s involvement.
