Day of the African Child with Malnutrition Reduction Strategies.
June 16, 2017.

International Day of the African Child takes place on June 16, 2017. The Day of the African Child has been celebrated every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day. It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to African children. In Soweto, South Africa, on June 16, 1976, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long, protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young students were shot, the most famous of which being Hector Peterson. More than a hundred people were killed in the protests of the following two weeks, and more than a thousand were injured.
The Day of the African Child (DAC) 2017 will be observed Under the theme The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for Children in Africa: Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunity. The Child friendly version is Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunities for children in Africa by 2030. Mamaland Mushroom Farms,is part of the efforts to elevate child protection agenda in conflict situation in Africa as well as a guarantee the protection and preservation of life and well-being of the African children.

DAC 2017 is commemorated every year on 16 June. Under the theme The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for Children in Africa: Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunity we should reduce deaths of children under five which over 54% contributed by Protein-Energy Malnutrition (P.E.M) by using alternative protein source which are Soya and Mushrooms.

Health Benefits of Selenium from Oyster Mushrooms-By Dr.Kalonga,AE.

Selenium is a trace mineral found naturally in the soil that also appears in certain foods and there are even small amounts in water.

Selenium is an extremely vital mineral for the human body as it increases immunity, takes part in antioxidant activity that defends against free radical damage and inflammation, and plays a key role in maintaining a healthy metabolism.
According to studies, consuming plenty of naturally occurring selenium has positive antiviral effects, is essential for successful male and female fertility and reproduction, and also reduces the risk of cancer, autoimmune and thyroid diseases.
Here are just a few ways that selenium benefits your body:-

1. Acts as an Antioxidant & Defends Against Oxidative Stress.
Selenium benefits include the ability to fight the aging process and help the immune system by reducing free radical damage. Selenium has a synergistic effect with other antioxidants like Vitamin E, enabling the body to fight oxidative stress and to defend against cancers like prostate and colon cancer.
Selenium is an essential component of glutathione peroxidase, which is an important enzyme for processes that protect lipids (fats) in cell membranes. Selenium is needed to fight oxidative degradation of cells and to protect against mutation and DNA damage that can cause disease.

2. Helps Defend Against Cancer .
Selenium is especially helpful if you have a weak immune system or a history of cancer in your family. Interventions using selenium treatments at high doses have shown that selenium benefits anti-cancer abilities within the body.
According to studies, selenium is effective at reducing the risk of cancer incidence, cancer caused mortality, and severity of cancers specifically in the liver, prostate, colo-rectal and lungs.
Selenium acts like a little mechanic within the body. It goes into the nucleus of cell where the DNA and genome are stored and finds damage. It attaches to protective antioxidants like glutathione and then works to reduce and repair damage done to DNA, which left uncontrolled could lead to cancerous cell mutation and tumor growth.
It does this because selenium has a special job of activating selenoproteins, acting in an enzymic role that helps antioxidants to do their job best. There is evidence that selenium benefits include not only being able cut cancer risk but also help to slow down existing cancer progression and tumor growth.

 3. Can Help Boost Fertility.
Selenium is required for proper sperm motility and also increases blood flow, two key components involved in conception and beating infertility. Selenium is incorporated in the sperm mitochondria capsule and may affect the behavior and function of the sperm as they move through the vaginal canal.
It appears that both low and high sperm selenium concentrations are reported to have a negative influence on the number of sperm, therefore aiming to meet the recommendation but not to far exceed it is important for fertility.
Some studies also show that selenium may even reduce the risk of miscarriage, however at this point more research has been dedicated to infertility in men than in women when it comes to selenium supplementation.

 4. Regulates Thyroid Function.
Research is now showing, through numerous studies, that there is a link between thyroid metabolism and selenium deficiency. Selenium acts as a catalyst for the production of active thyroid hormones.
If you imagine that your body is a manufacturing facility, the your thyroid would be the main boss in charge of regulating the whole operating system, so when the thyroid isn’t working properly, there are many serious, noticeable consequences.
The thyroid gland controls numerous important everyday body functions including appetite, sleep, temperature, weight, energy, and more.
A problem with proper thyroid function can result in negative symptoms such as irritability, muscle weakness, fatigue, weight gain or loss, trouble sleeping, and many other reactions, therefore acquiring proper amounts of selenium benefits the thyroid and body in many important ways.
A deficiency in selenium is correlated with problems within the thyroid and how it synthesizes the proper hormones, therefore more and more we can see the value of using selenium supplements to treat autoimmune and thyroid disorders.
Selenium acts as a powerful protector of the thyroid and regulates the production of reactive oxygen within the gland, and protects it from antibodies that can create thyroid disease.
5. Boosts Immunity.
According to studies, selenium is needed for the proper functioning of the immune system, and can also be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of viruses including HIV. In patients who already contracted HIV, selenium has been shown to also be useful in slowing down the progression of the disease into AIDS.

6. Helps Reduce Asthma Symptoms.
Observational studies have demonstrated that patients with chronic asthma may have lower levels of selenium. According to studies, when people with asthma took selenium supplements, they experienced less asthma related symptoms than those who took a placebo.
Experts think that selenium supplementation may be a useful add-on treatment to medication for patients with chronic asthma.  However more research is needed before this becomes a regular practice, as they have yet to determine selenium’s full effect on lung function.

7. Improves Blood Flow & Lowers Chance of Heart Disease.

Low selenium concentrations are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Selenium supplements or an increase of selenium-rich foods may be able to help prevent coronary heart disease. It’s believed that selenium can benefit heart health once again, by its ability to fight inflammation, increase blood flow, reduce free radical oxidative stress, and help with antioxidant activity.

To date, selenium concentrations have been inversely associated with coronary heart disease risk in observational studies, however observational studies can at times lead to misleading evidence and so findings are still inconclusive as to whether selenium will be commonly prescribed for heart disease patients going forward.

8. Increases Longevity.
Studies have shown just how important this vital mineral is to our health and longevity. If you want to live a long, vibrant life, selenium is definitely a mineral you want to include in your diet.
Selenium has also been studied for the treatment of dozens of conditions that range from asthma to arthritis; from thyroid disorder to heart disease. The risk of these conditions increase as we age, so consuming selenium can help to defend the body and contribute to a long life.
Selenium is a trace mineral, which means we only need a small amount of it. However our body is able to flush selenium out of your system somewhat quickly since it plays an actionable role in many important body functions, therefore it’s important to consume it regularly especially as you age in order to take advantage of all of these mentioned selenium benefits.

ROLES PLAYED BY MUSHROOM CULTIVATION IN POVERTY,MALNUTRITION AND UNEMPLOYMENT REDUCTION.

ROLES PLAYED BY MUSHROOM CULTIVATION IN POVERTY,MALNUTRITION AND UNEMPLOYMENT REDUCTION.

Mushroom cultivation in Tanzania could help reduce vulnerability to poverty, malnutrition, unemployment problem by strengthening economic livelihoods through the generation of fast yielding and nutritious source of food and reliable source of income. Since mushroom does not require big space of land, empty house, temporary clean shed, garage, etc could be used. It also does not need rain, sun for its growth, it is a viable and attractive activity for both rural farmers and urban dwellers. Small scale mushroom farmer does not require any significant big capital investment but lucrative and fast return. Mushroom substrates could be prepared from any agricultural waste materials like straw from rice, maize sorghum, banana leaves, sugarcane leaves and bagasse, water hyacinth, grasses, cotton waste, sawdust etc. Mushroom cultivation could be done on a part time basis and require little maintenance. Indirectly, mushroom cultivation also provides opportunities for improving the sustainability of small farming systems through the recycling of organic matter which can be used as a growing substrate, and then returned to the land as fertilizer or compost. Through the provision of income and improved nutrition, successful cultivation and trade in mushrooms can strengthen livelihood assets, which can not only reduce vulnerability to shocks, but enhance and individual’s and a community’s capacity to act upon other economic opportunity.
Mushrooms serve as a delicious foodstuff and also a source of food flavoring substances to staple food which is nutritious food that forms the basis of a traditional diet, particularly that of the poor in Tanzania. Mushrooms are often considered to provide a fair substitute for meat(chicken, pork and beef), with at least a comparable nutritional value to many vegetables. The consumption of mushroom can make a valuable addition to the often unbalanced diets like malnutrition due to lack of protein.
They are a good source of vitamin B, C and D, including niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, and folate, and various minerals including potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and selenium(an excellent antioxidant. They provide high fiber but low in carbohydrate and fat and contain no starch and low in sodium. Furthermore, edible mushrooms are an excellent source of high quality protein (reportedly between 19 -45 percent), like straw mushroom contains more protein than soya beans.
Mushroom cultivation activities in Tanzania will play an important role in supporting the local economy by contributing to subsistence food security, nutrition, and medicine, generating additional employment and income through local, regional and national trade and offering opportunities for processing enterprises such as pickling, sorting and drying.

 MAMALAND MUSHROOM'S PRODUCTION TRAINING PROGRAM.

In developing countries mushroom cultivation is gaining more attention as a possibility to use agricultural by-products, and to help alleviate poverty and food insecurity.

Certain mushroom species are rather easy to grow while others demand more specific cultivation methods and temperature. In general, the life cycle of a crop is rather short (varying from some weeks to a few months). Once the cropping cycle is completed the spent mushroom substrate/compost  can be used as a soil conditioner, or in some cases as animal feed.
Mamaland Mushroom Farm describes the simplest procedure; i.e. mushroom cultivation on substrates that only need heat treatment. Its aim is to exchange knowledge information on small-scale sustainable agriculture and related topics. The target group is the underprivileged population in rural areas. Mamaland Mushrooms Farm's main objective is to strengthen the self-reliance of the target group and to improve their livelihood by sharing experience and knowledge. This course trains new and experienced farmers in the background, techniques, and economics of farm scale commercial mushroom production.
At the completion of this course, you will:

  • Understand of the basics of mushroom production, harvesting, and marketing,
  • Be able to complete a basic marking plan and budget for a mushroom enterprise,
  • Understand the logistics of management, sales, and legal issues related to mushroom farming.
After receiving lots of requests for help and support we now run an online course. We’re really inspired by the idea of spread this idea further.Register your interest and we’ll let you know as soon as the course next opens for enrollment.

 GLOBAL MUSHROOM MARKET DEMAND.

Mushrooms are spongy, fleshy, porous, and fruity parts of a fungus, and are mostly grouped as vegetables. Due to increased recognition of its medicinal and nutritional values, coupled with the realization of the income generating potential of fungi through trade, the demand for mushrooms has been on the rise. The edibility of mushrooms depends on the absence of poisonous content and its desirable taste and aroma. Being a rich source of nutrition and being fat, cholesterol, and gluten-free, and very low in sodium content; mushrooms are gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers.
The global market for mushrooms was valued at $29,427.92 million in 2013. This market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.5% from 2014 to reach $50,034.12 million by 2019. Europe dominated the market in 2013, and is projected to be the fastest-growing market for mushrooms between 2014 and 2019, followed by the Asia-Pacific region.

The total number of edible and medicinal fungi is over 2,300 species. Cultivated mushrooms have become popular with over 200 genera of useful macro fungi in the world. The most common ones that are produced and consumed are button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus),shiitake mushrooms(Lentinula edodes),and oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) and accounted for nearly 76% of the global mushroom market size in 2013.

Button mushrooms were the first mushrooms to be commercially exploited on an industrial scale and hence are more popular than other types. The button mushrooms segment contributed around 36.1% to the total mushroom market in 2013. In the U.S. and Europe, a major contribution towards mushroom production is seen for white button mushroom. In Asian countries, the scenario is different and other species are also cultivated commercially. The global demand for shiitake mushrooms has placed its market size (volume and value) second only to that of button mushrooms. Shiitake mushrooms are specialty mushrooms and are popular in the U.S. and in Western European countries.

Mushrooms can be used fresh or preserved/processed, for instance dried, deep frozen, and canned. With a rise in income levels, the demand for mushrooms is bound to increase across all major developing nations such as India, Thailand, and Canada. China has been producing mushrooms at low costs with the help of seasonal growing, state subsidies, and capturing the potential markets such as the U.S., Germany, and France, with processed mushrooms at costs not remunerative to the growers in other mushroom producing countries.

VALUE-ADDED MUSHROOMS PRODUCTS.

Mushroom pastes, pickles and creamy sauces are popular in Europe, while mushroom-based snacks, cakes, teas and beverages are often consumed in Asia.Meat-flavored snacks, extruded snacks, even mushroom jellies and cakes are popular in China. Mushroom wine is common in Korea, as are alcoholic drinks with mushroom extract in Japan. Patented products include mushroom and fish paste, mushroom-flavored coffee and soy sauce flavored with mushroom juice.

Many people are intrigued by mushrooms' nutritional properties in addition to their culinary appeal. Mushrooms are the only non-animal source of vitamin D. In addition, mushrooms contain some unsaturated fatty acids and provide several B vitamins. Some even contain significant vitamin C, as well as potassium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. Mushrooms contain many essential amino acids; white agaricus mushrooms, for example, contain more protein than kidney beans. Shiitake mushrooms are less nutritious but are still a good source of protein. Some mushrooms could be a viable and economical source of antioxidants in the diet. Numerous mushroom-based products have been marketed to promote weight loss.

Mushrooms have been used to treat or prevent diseases for centuries. Asian traditions maintain that some mushrooms are natural pharmaceuticals and promote good health. Researchers have confirmed that mushrooms contain substances that may reduce the risk of cancer, boost the immune system and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Other therapeutic applications of mushrooms include wound-healing covers, antibacterial mushroom extracts and liver function preparations.

MUSHROOM ANATOMY-Dr.Kalonga,AE.

A mushroom is a macrofungus with a distinctive fruiting body, which can be found either above ground (epigeous) or below ground (hypogeous), large enough to be seen with the naked eye and to be picked by hand. Cultivation of mushrooms starts from spawn, which is used to inoculate substrate. Under optimum conditions, mushrooms can be harvested from 10 days to 6 months after spawning depending upon the strains of species used.              Mushrooms are not plants but are fungi.Yet they are related to that green mold that grows on your bread  when it gets old. They do not reproduce by seeds but instead produce spores that are released from the mushroom when it’s mature. Most mushrooms do not require light to grow like plants do,since they do not have chlorophyll to carryout photosynthesis.Let’s start with some basic terminology.

1.Spores-Mushroom spores are produced on the gill of the cap of the mushroom. There are microscopic and similar to seeds of higher plant life. Spores are used to spawn mushroom compost.

2.Spawn-Sorghum, millet are cook with water and sometime gypsum is added then it is all steam sterilized. Mycelium is added to whatever grain you used and are allowed to grow for 10-17 days. The mycelium will completely colonize (grow) on the grain and this is called spawn.

3.Mycelium-The vegetative part of a fungus, consist of many fine white filaments called Hyphae.

4.Hyphae-Single strands of mushroom mycelium.

5.Primordia (pins or pinheads)-Tiny fruiting mushrooms that are roughly 1/8 to 1/4 of inch in diameter.

6.Inoculation-The process of introducing spores or mycelium culture to a substrate.

7.Substrate-its the material the mushrooms live on and grow. Depending on the mushroom the substrate maybe different. Some examples are compost, wood, sawdust, hay etc.

8.Incubation-The time after inoculation and before the mycelium has fully colonized its substrate. This step is done in a sterile environment to prevent/reduce contamination.

Basic Mushroom Anatomy.

Mushroom Cap-outer part of the mushroom. The gills are underneath
Gills- spores are released from the gills of mature mushrooms
Stipe or stem-supports the cap of the mushroom
Mycelium (hyphae)-similar to roots. This is where a fungus absorbs its nutrients.

Basic Mushroom Reproduction.

mush_lifecycle
Mushrooms reproduce by releasing spores. If these spores fall on the correct substrate for them to grow they germinate (begin to grow). They start by developing mycelium. The mycelium keep branching out until there a trigger to tell them that they need to start forming fruit bodies. This trigger can be a number of things like: changes in CO2 levels, reaching the surface of the substrate they are in or a decrease in nutrients. At this point the mycelium begin to produce pinheads (small immature mushrooms). The pinheads grow and if not harvest will reach maturity and start the process all over again.

THE EFFECT OF LAVOSTATIN FOUND IN MUSHROOM ON LOWELING CHOLESTEROL AND REDUCING RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES-Dr.Kalonga,AE .

THE EFFECT OF LAVOSTATIN FOUND IN MUSHROOM ON LOWELING CHOLESTEROL AND REDUCING RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES-Dr.Kalonga,AE .

Lovastatin is a statin drug, used for lowering cholesterol (hypolipidemic agent) in those with hypercholesterolemia to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Lovastatin is a naturally occurring compound found in food such as oyster mushrooms.
Lovastatin is an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate.Mevalonate is a required building block for cholesterol biosynthesis and lovastatin interferes with its production by acting as a reversible competitive inhibitor for HMG-CoA, which binds to the HMG-CoA reductase. Lovastatin is a prodrug, an inactive lactone in its native form, the gamma-lactone closed ring form in which it is administered, is hydrolysed in vivo to the β-hydroxy acid open ring form; which is the active form.

Lovastatin and other statins have recently been studied for their chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic effects in certain cancers.
Oyster mushrooms are a natural source of lovastatin--a chemical used in pharmaceutical drugs to produce expensive drugs such as Mevacor,Advicor,Altocor and Altoprev used to reduce total cholesterol levels in humans. Lovastatin works in the body to inhibit the production of cholesterol, with a special affinity for inhibiting LDL cholesterol.
